In October 2020, the congress of the International Rowing Federation voted overwhelmingly for the introduction of sea rowing as a new discipline, while considering the elimination of the light weight category to respect the quota of athletes.
Nevertheless, light weight events are maintained for 2020 and 2024, with a prospect of elimination in 2028. Since 2020, the number of men’s and women’s events has been balanced, ensuring full parity. Couple rowing disciplines, where each rower uses two oars of about 3 meters (such as skiff, couple two and couple four, including for light weights), as well as point rowing, where each rower handles a oar of about 3.9 meters (like the two without helmsman, the four without helmsman, and the eight with helmsman), are in the program.
